Reculver Country Park is located on the North Kent coast near Herne Bay. Formerly a site for WW2 testing of Barnes Wallace’s bouncing bomb, it’s now a tranquil place to relax, enjoy stunning coastal views and look around the imposing 12th Century tower and the Roman Fort. The site now houses a visitor centre which highlights the historical, archaeological and conservation value of the area.
To cater for increasing visitor numbers improvements were required to car parking and public access facilities. An important part of this requirement was to limit levels of surface water leaving the site via a hard paved surface into local drains.
Ovenden Allworks Ltd installed ABG Truckcell 80 permeable cellular paving, as specified by Canterbury City Council. The project enabling works included cut and fill earthworks which used surplus fill to create bunds around the car park perimeter. An ABG Geogrid stabilised free-draining granular sub-base (DTp Type 3), plus a gravel bedding layer was then installed prior to 3,000m² of Truckcell being placed and filled with angular aggregate within a kerbed edge. Improvements to disabled access pedestrian routes, street furniture and cycle facilities were also carried out.
The permeable Truckcell 80 surface provides a durable, free-draining and long-term sustainable car park surface, enabling rainwater to drain directly into the sub-base and existing subgrade soils, without surcharging local drains with surface water run-off (SuDS) and requiring minimal maintenance.
Truckcell is a heavy duty cellular paving system manufactured from 100% recycled and recyclable plastic, capable of sustaining frequent HGV loads up to GVW 60 and 10 tonne wheels loads. It can be filled with angular gravel or top soil and grass seeded, according to the application.
