Green Roofs, Blue Roofs & Podium Decks
Rooftop areas, including podium decks, provide valuable, useable space on a development. The modern approach is to use these spaces to significantly benefit the wider development. These areas can be used to replace habitats which would otherwise be lost, enhance biodiversity and provide important public amenity and greenery in city centres. In the case of blue roof systems, which can be utilised at podium and roof level, they also support a good SuDs design by providing temporary storage and controlled discharge of storm water. As such, ABG podium deck and roof systems contribute significantly towards achieving BREEAM and LEED sustainability points.
ABG specialise in the design, manufacture, supply and installation of systems for blue roofs, green roofs, biodiverse roofs and podium decks. Deckdrain is a subsurface drainage layer, predominantly used in podium deck and intensive roof garden applications where the requirement is to move excess water to the outlets as quickly as possible. Roofdrain attenuation layer, often referred to as a reservoir board, is used when there is a requirement to maximise water storage for supporting vegetation layers, for example on extensive green roofs.
Our product range extends to growing medias suitable for sedum, biodiverse and intensive roof gardens, aluminium upstands and vegetation layers, including pre-grown mats and plug plants.
Typical Applications:
- Podium deck drainage
- Roof garden drainage

Extensive Green Roofs
Extensive Green Roofs, often referred to as sedum or wildflower roofs, are the best known type of green roof and are relatively self-sufficient and low maintenance. Extensive Green Roofs contribute towards improving air quality, reduce the visual impact of the roof and assist in controlling rain water run-off as well as contributing to enhancing the acoustic and thermal properties of the roof.

Intensive Green Roofs
Intensive Green Roofs, often referred to as roof gardens, may be landscaped to include trees, lawns, flower beds and paved areas. With an intensive roof the only real limit to its scope is the weight of the system and the structure necessary to support it. Intensive green roofs create additional usable space in modern urban developments.

Biodiverse Roofs
Biodiverse Roofs, sometimes referred to as brown roofs, replace and often enhance the habitat that would otherwise be lost to a new development. Biodiverse roofs are designed to create a natural habitat to support a variety of plants, birds, animals and invertebrates. Biodiverse roofs contribute significantly towards achieving additional BREEAM points, as well as improving air quality, assisting in controlling rain water run-off as well as contributing to enhancing the acoustic and thermal properties of the roof.

Blue roofs
Blue Roofs are designed to attenuate rainwater rather than drain it away as quickly as possible as in traditional roof drainage design. ABG blueroof offers a new development in the management of storm water by collecting and retaining rain fall within the actual roof structure before discharging at a defined, controlled rate. This is particularly beneficial on sites where land take is tight, such as in urbanised areas, and where installation of other attenuation techniques such as ponds or subterranean tanks is not feasible.

Podium Decks
Many buildings incorporate landscaped basements and roofs commonly known as podiums. The basement podium can vary from lawn and paved amenity areas to car parking. These waterproofed decks often have minimal falls which make them susceptible to standing water. Deckdrain subsurface drainage layer offers an effective and reliable drainage system for podium decks of all sizes, whilst also providing additional protection to the waterproofing layer below.
