Blue Roofs, Green Roofs and Podium Decks

Rooftop areas, including podium decks, provide valuable, usable space on a development and the modern approach is to use these spaces to benefit the wider development. These areas can be used to replace habitats which would otherwise be lost, enhance biodiversity and provide important public amenity and green spaces in city centres. In the case of blue roof systems, which can be utilised at podium and roof level, they also support a good SuDS design, providing attenuation and controlled discharge of storm water. As such, ABG’s blue roof and green roof systems can contribute significantly towards meeting BREEAM or LEED sustainability criteria.

ABG specialise in the design, manufacture, supply and installation of systems for blue roofs, green roofs, biodiverse roofs and podium decks. Deckdrain is a subsurface drainage layer, predominantly used in podium deck and intensive roof garden applications where the requirement is to move excess water to the outlets as quickly as possible. The Roofdrain reservoir board is used when there is a requirement to maximise water retention to support vegetation layers (as well as drainage), for example on extensive green or biodiverse roofs.

Our product range extends to providing growing media suitable for green roof sedums, biodiverse and intensive roof gardens, aluminium upstands and vegetation layers; including pre-grown mats and plug plants.

Typical applications

  • Podium deck drainage
  • Reservoir / drainage boards on Extensive & Biodiverse Roofs
  • Drainage layer beneath block paving
  • ‘Blue Roof’ attenuation systems at roof & podium levels
  • Roof garden finishes such as soft and hard landscaping materials

Benefits

  • Management of storm water ‘at source’
  • Habitat replacement and enhancement
  • Creation of valuable amenity space
  • Significant contribution towards achieving BREEAM and LEED sustainability points
  • Protection to the waterproofing system, therefore extending its overall design life
  • Quick and easy installation to minimise programme time
  • Robust materials to resist installation damage
  • The complete system from design to installation and on-going maintenance

Typical Client Profile

  • Building Owners & Developers
  • Landscape & Main-Build Architects
  • Civil, Public Health & Structural Engineers
  • Main Contractors, Landscape & Roofing Contractors

Blue roofs

Blue Roofs are designed to attenuate / slow rainwater discharge rather than drain it away as quickly as possible, as is the case with traditional roofing drainage design. ABG blueroof offers a new development in the management of storm water by allowing the rainfall to be attenuated within the roof build-up before discharging at a defined, controlled rate. This is particularly beneficial on tight urban sites where installation of other attenuation techniques such as ponds or below ground / basement tanks are not feasible.

Extensive Green Roofs

Extensive Green Roofs are the best known type of green roof and are relatively self-sufficient and low maintenance, often incorporating sedum or wildflower mats. Extensive Green Roofs contribute towards improving air quality, minimising / softening the visual impact of the roof and assist in controlling rain water run-off; as well as enhancing the acoustic and thermal properties of the roof.

Intensive Green Roofs

Intensive Green Roofs, often referred to as roof gardens, may be landscaped to include trees, lawns, flower beds and paved areas. With an intensive roof the only real limit to its scope is the imagination of the architect and the structure necessary to support it. Intensive green roofs create additional usable amenity space in modern urban developments.

Biodiverse Roofs

Biodiverse Roofs replace and often enhance the local habitat that would otherwise be lost to a new development. Biodiverse roofs are designed to create a natural habitat to support a variety of plants, birds, animals and invertebrates. Biodiverse roofs can contribute significantly towards achieving additional BREEAM points, as well as improving air quality, assisting in controlling rain water run-off and contributing to enhancing the acoustic and thermal properties of the roof.

Podium Decks

Many new buildings now incorporate landscaped amenity areas, above basement or car park areas. These podium areas can vary from lawn, planter & paved amenity areas to additional areas for access or car parking. These are often large, waterproofed decks with minimal falls, which makes drainage a key design parameter. Deckdrain sub-surface drainage layer / geocomposite offers an effective and reliable drainage system for podium decks of all sizes, whilst also providing additional protection to the waterproofing layer below.
